Robert Cone was nominated, in March 2011, for promotion to four-star general head of U.S. Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC), the intellectual heart of the Army. He replaces Gen. Martin Dempsey, who becomes Chief of Staff of the Army.

He has been serving as commander, III Corps and Fort Hood. His replacement there will be Donald M. Campbell Jr., who has been commanding general, U.S. Army Recruiting Command.

Previously, Cone headed Combined Security Transition Command-Afghanistan, and earlier was Commanding General, U.S. Army National Training Center and Fort Irwin.
