James Chang is 16 years old and is a junior in the IB Program at Stanton College Preparatory School. James began his piano studies at the age of four and violin studies at the age of seven. At the age of eight, Chang performed Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart's Concerto No. 19 (1st mvt.) and received a standing ovation. He made his solo debut at the age of 10 performing an hour-long classical program in front of an audience of 300. He was also selected as one of nine finalists in the 11th Annual World Piano Pedagogy Conference in Atlanta, 2006. In 2007, he won 1st place in the piano division of the 2007 Bach Festival Young Artists Competition at Rollins College and 2nd place overall. Last December, James was chosen to perform at the Friday Musicale Outstanding Young Pianists. He and Kong Shi were also been selected to perform selections from Saint-Saëns' Carnival of the Animals with the Jacksonville Symphony Orchestra in March as a duo team. He has won district and state awards in solo and concerto divisions of the National Federation of Music Clubs. Other awards included 1st place in both piano solo and piano concerto in the 2006 and 2007 Greater Jacksonville Piano Competitions. Currently, he is studying the Scherzo from Charles Tomlinson Griffes' Fantasy Pieces, Ballade No. 3 by Frédéric Chopin, and Concerto in G, 1st mvt. by Maurice Ravel. In addition to learning piano, he is also an advanced violinist and is currently studying Camille Saint-Saëns' Violin Concerto No. 3 in B Minor, 1st mvt. In 2008, James was a semifinalist in the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra's Young Artist Concerto Competition. James studies piano with Myrtle Edwards and Peggy Fleming, and violin with former semi-finalist of the Paganini International Violin Competition, Aaron Krosnick. He is also a violinist in the Philharmonic Orchestra of the Jacksonville Symphony Youth Orchestra ([1]).

His interests include studying music (especially orchestral scores such as Stravinsky's, Shostakovich's and Mahler's orchestral works), computer technology, Traditional Chinese Medicine, and other subjects.

He has completed a transcription of Stravinsky's The Rite of Spring for two piani as of 2-15-2008.
