A siege occurs during some form of warfare when one side during hostilities attempts to blockade the other within a population centre or structure such as a city or a castle. Besiegers may attempt to block supplies or storm the fortified area or building itself. A variety of methods may be used to achieve this, such as artillery bombardment or special military equipment. Sieges have occurred throughout human history.
