I am a native of Greensboro, North Carolina, graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1983 with a Bachelors degree in pure mathematics. During mu subsequent 25 years of active duty in the navy, I earned a masters degree in astronomy (with distinction) from the University of Western Sydney, and my Ph.D. in Astronomy from James Cook University. My thesis research was on optical and millimeter radio detections, and dynamic properties of Earth-like planets and Kuiper belts about M dwarf stars.

I am an astronomer and director of the US Naval Observatory Flagstaff Station, GS-15 civil servant, former Navy Commander and officer for 29 years as a carrier pilot in E-2C's, T-45Cs, T-2Cc, F-14Ds, HH-60Fs, T-44A's, C-2ARs, C-12's, T-34Cs, and others. I commanded Strike Training Squadron NINE before retiring from active duty. I have subspecialties in Manpower, Space, command and control, Aerospace safety, and my degrees are in pure mathematics, physics, astrophysics, and astronomy. I also have licenses in radio (Amateur Extra), aviation (Commercial instrument), and SCUBA (C card Advanced).
