Under Saddam Hussein, the strategic reserves and best trained- and equipped-part of Iraqi ground forces. Considered politically loyal, they still were basically a field force, as, for example, as the spearhead, replaced after they had control, of the invasion into Kuwait. Not as committed to regime proper as the outsided division of the Special Republican Guard, to say nothing of the paramilitary Special Security Organization.
