Peter Gutmann is a professor at University of Auckland in New Zealand, specialising in network security.

He has published a number of well-known papers including:

  • Secure Deletion of Data from Magnetic and Solid-State Memory [1], a classic paper used as a reference by many disk-wiping utilities.
  • A Cost Analysis of Windows Vista Content Protection [2], with the rather memorable "executive executive summary":

The Vista Content Protection specification could very well constitute the longest suicide note in history.
