This page lists the different types of Diabetes. All types of diabetes are characterized by excessive urination (''[[polyuria]]''). In [[diabetes insipidus]], the urination is due to insufficient effect of [[antidiuretic hormone]]. In the other types of diabetes, the urination is due to high blood levels of glucose. The glucose functions as a diuretic and causes the kidneys to make urine.

The terms insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus and non insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus are no longer used to classify diabetes mellitus because people with any type of diabetes mellitus may need treatment with insulin.
