The Abwehr was the military counterintelligence and human-source intelligence organization for the armed services of Nazi Germany (OKW), as opposed to that of the individual military services. It was eventually dissolved, and merged into the Nazi RSHA, because it had become a center of anti-Nazi activities.
It was headed by Admiral Wilhelm Canaris, who was executed, along with a deputy, Hans Oster, just before the end of the war.
