For more information, see: M16 rifle.

The U.S. Army M4 is a shorter-barreled and generally lighter-weight version of the standard M16 rifle with an extendable stock. It takes the same ammunition, but is more convenient in vehicles and in the close spaces of urban combat.

Like the M16, it has a Picatinny rail system that accepts accessories common to both types. These accessories include the under-barrel M203 and M320 grenade launchers.
