Oversight and new legislation for the military is the responsibility, in the Senate, of the U.S. Senate Armed Services Committee (SASC). While most other Senate committees are in the form "Committee on...", this is the name of this committee. Carl Levin (D-Michigan) is the chairman and John McCain (R-Arizona) is the ranking minority member.

It has six functional subcommittees; the membership is changing in October 2009 as a result of a death and resignation, and the appointment of new members.
