Registered Jack: The set of "RJ" series standard connectors needed to implement the Carterphone Decision by the Supreme Court of the United States, which required the then telephone monopolies of the U.S. to allow third-party, customer-owned devices to connect to the Public Switched Telephone Network, over a restricted number of well-defined interfaces
