The Philippines (Filipino: Pilipinas), officially called the Republic of the Philippines (Republika ng Pilipinas) or RP, is an archipelagic nation located in Southeast Asia, with Manila as its capital city. The Philippine Archipelago comprises 7,107 islands in the western Pacific Ocean. It is a part of the Malay Archipelago, the largest in the world. It stretches from the southern part of China to the northern tip of Borneo. Its area is about 300,000 sq. km. (116,000 sq. mi.), and it is divided into three major island regions, the Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.
From 1521 to 1898, it was a colony of Spain, then a colony of the United States of America from 1898 to 1946. The Filipino people led uprisings against both countries, the Philippine Revolution against Spain, and the Philippine-American War during U.S. occupation.
