German naval officer who rose to head the submarine forces of Nazi Germany, then the overall naval command (Oberkommando der Marine), and was briefly Adolf Hitler's successor as Reichkanzler. Sentenced to 10 years imprisonment by the International Military Tribunal (Nuremberg)
