Between 1949 and 1990 the former (and present) capital of Germany was divided into West Berlin and East Berlin.

The city consisted of the American, British, French and Soviet sectors established after the defeat of the Nazi Germany in 1945. West Berlin emerged from the first three sectors, while East Berlin was the name of Soviet-occupied Berlin.
