Manga is the Japanese word for what in English are commonly referred to as comics or graphic novels, as well as comic strips and satirical cartoons. In current usage, it is most closely associated with comics, or "story manga." Since the 1980s, manga have accounted for roughly a third of the units sold of all commercial publications (excluding newspapers), and roughly a quarter of all money paid for commercial publications (again, excluding newspapers). There are many genres of manga, but the largest are shōnen ("boys'"), shōjo ("girls'"), seinen ("men's") and josei ("women's").

History

How one delineates the history of manga depends on what one means by "manga." The word itself
