The Irish Sea is a sea separating the islands of Ireland and Britain. The Isle of Man lies between the two larger islands. The Irish Sea is one of the busiest shipping areas in the world, in part giving cause to proposals from the 19th century onwards to build an 80-kilometre tunnel to connect Ireland and Britain. There had also been plans discussed to create a shorter tunnel between Northern Ireland and Scotland across the North Channel.
