In the U.S. Army, the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment is one of the few units that retains the formal title of "regiment", but, in current terms, it is a Heavy Brigade Combat Team. It retains its lineage and traditional name of "Brave Rifles," and is an active unit with a distinguished record.

Prior to the restructuring, it was a unit intended for independent operation for armored reconnaissance and raids in the context of a corps organization, with a role of screening and scouting for the larger divisions. The Regiment, however, did not have the sustained logistical support of a divisional formation.
