The Wikimedia Foundation[1] is a non-profit located in San Francisco, California that owns and operates Wikimedia.[2] Wikimedia in turn manages about a dozen projects, one of which is Wikipedia and another is Wikibooks,[3] which among other activities markets e-book versions of material found on Wikipedia.[4]

The Wikimedia Foundation was created in 2003 by Jimmy Wales. It is run by a board of trustees, of which Jimmy Wales is a trustee and chairman emeritus.[5] The Executive Director is Lila Tretikov, who succeeded Sue Gardner in 2014.
