Some of our finest [ about ] Approved Articles Developed Articles (over 700) Draft of the Week [ about ] Albert Gallatin (born in Geneva, Switzerland, on Jan. 29, 1761; died, August 12, 1849 in Astoria, New York) was an American politician, statesman, diplomat and linguist who served as the United States Secretary of the Treasury from 1801 to 1814. Gallatin was born into an old aristocratic family. He was orphaned at age nine but well cared for by his extended family. While a student at the elite Geneva Academy, Gallatin read deeply in philosophy of Jean-Jacques Rousseau and the French Physiocrats; he became dissatisfied with the traditionalism of Geneva. [more...] New Draft of the Week [ about ] The B-17, nicknamed the "Flying Fortress" was a heavy bomber that was the workhorse, along with the B-24, of America's strategic bombing of Germany in World War II. The Army Air Forces (AAF) considered the B-17 the perfect embodiment of its strategic bombing doctrine because of its long-range, its ability to defend itself, and its highly accurate Norden bomb-sight. The Boeing corporation built 6,981 B-17s in various models, and another 5,745 were built under a nationwide collaborative effort by Douglas and Lockheed (Vega). They were mainly deployed in Europe, flying with the 8th Air Force in England and the 15th Air Force in the Mediterranean. Their mission was strategic bombing. [more...]
