Colonel Muammar Gaddafi (or Al Qadhdhafi, closer to the Arabic;[1] born 7 June 1942) is a Libyan military officer and the de facto leader of Libya since a coup in 1969. His authority has been seriously challenged by the Arab Spring popular uprising that began in Libya in February 2011.
