De Smet (population slightly over 1000) is a town in South Dakota most famous for being the site of the Laura Ingalls Wilder homestead and the scene of several of the Little House books. It was founded in 1883 (year of incorporation) after the site was platted and named for Fr. Jean De Smet by the railroad company which first extended its line to the town site.
