Medieval history is the term traditionally used to describe the period of western history delineated by the end of the Roman Empire in about AD 410 and the beginning of the modern period, which usually coincides with the early years of the Renaissance in about AD 1500.

Use of terminology

The Medieval era is often subdivided into two periods. The early Medieval is sometimes referred to as the Dark Ages, although the application of this term differs according to the events particular to an area since it usually denotes a time of poor historical evidence or political chaos. This period continues to approximately AD 1000, seen as a watershed in many countries. The Middle Ages begins at this point and continues to the end of the Medieval period.
