Definition: The concept, sometimes associated with Adam Ferguson's concept of civil society, refers to a political state devoted primarily to the promotion and advancement of commercial interests. Adam Smith referred to this as commercial society. [d] [e]

The Wikipedia article on civil society contained reference to a "commercial state". This stub is pieced together to support and elaborate on that usage. Comments on the appropriateness of this item would be welcome. Colleagues (mostly in Europe) use this term to describe the U.S., but I am not aware of any published citations to support its use.
