The Voyenno-vozdushnye sily Rossii, Russian Air Force, or Военно-воздушные cилы России is the air force of the Russian Federation. It is much reorganized from the Soviet system, which split air functions into a number of autonomous arms:

  • Ground army aviation
  • Strategic missile forces (RVSN)
  • Air defense forces (PVO)
  • General aviation (VVS)
  • Naval aviation (VFM)
  • Airborne forces

These have now been consolidated to avoid duplication.

History

The first Russian aircraft training started in 1910, with the first maneuvers with Farman and Bleriot aircraft in 1912. The first operations were reconnaissance in the Balkans in 1912.
