The fundamental objective of an information system is to improve the process of decision making. An information system is a very special kind of system, constituted by persons, procedures and equipment that work interdependently, subject to multiple mechanisms, in the processing of data into information.

The presence of any kind of system, physical or mental, is essential to promote the flow of information through communication channels. Usually an information system is understood only as a symbiosis between software and hardware. However, that is far from being true, any human being, due to the huge quantity of information stored in his or her brain, can be thought of as an information system.
