Healthcare economics addresses, formally from economic paradigms and practically from a political standpoint, of health care, its planning, and delivery. It considers resources, resource allocation, and rationing. The field includes both the public and private sectors.

It is an extremely important political issue in all industrialized countries, but no more so than in the United States.
