Started in October 2008, the Coalition to Defend Free Speech is a coalition of organizations supporting freedom of speech, specifically against the charge of "defamation of religions", introduced to the U.N. High Commissioner on Human Rights by the Organization of the Islamic Conference in 1999.[1] The charge was introduced by Pakistan, entitled "Defamation of Islam".[2]

Individuals involved include Morton Halperin of the Open Society Institute, Floyd Abrams and John Wohlstetter, Senior Vice president of the American Jewish Congress.
