ISBN/ISSN
The 10 digit International Standard Book Number (ISBN) was approved as an ISO standard in 1970. The 8 digit ISSN system for serials and periodicals, was adopted as an ISO standard in 1975. On 1 January 2007, the book industry began using 13 digit ISBNs as standard to identify all books. The 978 prefix is added in front of the current ISBN-10, with the addition of a new check digit at the end of the code.
